Mohamed Shamman Waheed, who was dismissed as Immigration Controller on Friday, was arrested by police Friday evening.

Police are investigating allegations that immigration officers, including Shamman, used their positions to obtain financial benefits from foreigners.

In a press release issued Friday evening, police confirmed Shamman’s arrest and stated that individuals from various sections of Immigration were involved in the case. The investigation does not involve employees from the task force and risk management section.

According to police findings, the case involves:

  • Immigration employees searching a residence occupied by foreigners and detaining several individuals.

  • Foreigners being taken into immigration custody along with MVR 530,000.

  • One foreigner being released at night on Shamman’s orders.

  • Immigration employees later meeting the released foreigner on the street and taking the money to Shamman’s residence.

The investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, President Mohamed Muizzu on Friday appointed former Police Commissioner Ahmed Faseeh as the Controller General of Immigration, following the dismissal of Shamaan from the post.
