Nilandhoo sewerage system expected completion by 2026

The gravity sewerage system being installed in F. Nilandhoo is expected to be completed by 2026, Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Managing Director Abdul Matheen said Tuesday.
Matheen made the statement in response to public concerns over sewage leaks in the island. Several residents have been raising concerns about the deteriorating sewerage system, which has caused sewage to leak into different areas in recent days.
Responding to a post on X that included images of the sewage leaks, Matheen stated that Nilandhoo currently operates a vacuum sewerage system. He noted that the system, originally designed for 15 years, is now 18 years old, making its operation and maintenance increasingly difficult.
MWSC has been awarded the contract to install a gravity sewerage system to provide a long-term solution. The design phase has already begun, with land identification, land surveys, and topographic surveys completed. Practical work on the new system is scheduled to begin in May.
“The installation of a completely new gravity system will be challenging, and the new sewerage system is expected to be completed by the end of 2026,” Matheen said.
He added that MWSC’s role is limited to installing the new gravity system, while maintenance and repairs of the existing vacuum system will continue to be handled by the utility service providers in Nilandhoo.
