
Man in critical condition following suicide attempt in custody

A 34-year-old man is in critical condition and receiving treatment on a ventilator after attempting suicide while in police custody, according to Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital.

Police reported that the individual was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly damaging household property while under the influence of alcohol.
In a statement issued on Saturday, police said that relevant authorities have been informed, including the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
A Major Crime Investigation Team has been deployed to Kulhudhuffushi to investigate the incident. The Police Professional Standards Command has also launched an internal investigation, which has been given special priority.
Incidents of suicide and attempted suicide in custody have been reported in recent years. In September 2023, two inmates died by suicide. In December 2022, a detainee who attempted suicide while in police custody later died during treatment. Authorities have since indicated that corrective actions were taken in response.
