The Maldivian government is keeping a close watch on the condition of a student injured in a training accident in the Philippines, foreign minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel confirmed on Sunday.

The student, Abdul Maniu, who is currently undergoing pilot training at the Airworks Aviation Academy, sustained injuries after crashing into the propeller of an aircraft during a flight exercise. The nature and extent of his injuries have not yet been publicly disclosed, but officials say his condition is being monitored carefully.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Khaleel stated that he had spoken with Maniu’s father, Amir, to discuss the student's current condition and the support being provided.

"The child's mother and brother have now gone to the Philippines and with God's grace, the child is recovering," Khaleel wrote.

He added that Maniu’s father acknowledged the assistance and updates provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Higher Education, and Civil Aviation authorities.

"He expressed his happiness that the government is watching the matter so closely. He appreciated the support he was receiving from other students studying in the Philippines at such a time and expressed his gratitude for it," the minister noted.

Khaleel further emphasised that the government’s active involvement in the matter comes under the directive of President Mohamed Muizzu, who has instructed that the student's wellbeing be a priority.
