
Man in police custody dies after suicide attempt
The individual, identified as Sajid Sameer, had been arrested by police on suspicion of causing a disturbance while under the influence of alcohol.
A 34-year-old man who attempted to take his own life while in police custody at the HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Police Station has died.
The individual, identified as Sajid Sameer, had been arrested by police on suspicion of causing a disturbance while under the influence of alcohol.
According to authorities, he attempted suicide in his cell on the night of 4 April. He was taken to Kuldhuffushi Regional Hospital the same night and placed on a ventilator.
Hospital officials confirmed that he died at around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Police stated that the individual was in critical condition when he was brought to the hospital. Following the incident, police informed the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and launched an internal investigation.
A special team from the Major Crime Investigation Department has been deployed to Kulhudhuffushi to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
