The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday designated additional locations in Malé where rallies, marches, and processions may be conducted without prior permission from the police.

Previously, public demonstrations were permitted without written police authorisation only in the Carnival area.

The Ministry has now announced three more such areas under Article 24 of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act.

According to the announcement, the four designated locations are:

  • 1-

    Henveiru carnival area

  • 2-

    Rasfannu area

  • 3-

    Industrial Zone

  • 4-

    Usfasgandu area

The announcement comes as protests continue in Malé following the 18 April incident involving 21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, who was found lying on the rooftop of a house after falling from a building.

Protesters have been gathering near the Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building on Majeedhee Magu. Police have been erecting barricades in the area nightly in anticipation of demonstrations.

The protests have continued for over ten days. Police have used pepper spray and force to disperse crowds and have arrested two individuals.
