President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he does not intend to propose any constitutional amendments to change the age limit for those seeking to run for public office, including the presidency.

Responding to a question from Dhauru during a press conference held at the President’s Office on Saturday, the President said he has no plans to change the current candidacy age range.

“I don’t want to. What is that for?” he said.

Referring to global examples, he noted, “How old is the current president in the United States? But how healthy is he,” referencing US President Donald Trump, who is 78.

The Maldivian constitution was amended to allow individuals between the ages of 30 and 65 to contest for the positions of president and vice president. This age cap was introduced in 2015 during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. At the time, it was part of a constitutional amendment that facilitated the appointment of then-Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb as vice president.

The amendment was later reversed, restoring the broader eligibility for candidacy that had previously been in place.
