The Maldives Police Service has issued a warning regarding a series of scams targeting users of Temu, an online shopping platform that has gained wide usage in the country.

According to police, fraudsters have created inauthentic websites and are circulating phishing messages to deceive individuals into providing personal and payment information.

The scams identified by police include:

  • Phishing Messages and Emails: Messages falsely claiming to be from Temu or courier services are being circulated. These typically contain links requesting personal or financial details, often citing issues with orders or claiming additional charges are due.

  • Credit Card Scams: Fraudulent websites and advertisements request card details by claiming payment issues, thereby obtaining sensitive information unlawfully.

  • 2D Card Scams: Cards that do not require two-factor authentication are reportedly targeted. Victims who enter their information on phishing sites may find their card details used for unauthorised online payments.

Police have issued guidance on how individuals can protect themselves from such scams:

  • Exercise caution with messages received from unfamiliar or suspicious numbers.

  • Avoid clicking on links that do not direct to the official Temu website. Pay attention to domain names with altered or misspelled characters.

  • Refrain from entering card or personal details on unverified platforms or through links shared via SMS or email.
