
Man arrested over attack on MDP activist released
Mariyam Zubair was attacked after making a public statement referring to the use of vape by President Mohamed Muizzu’s son.

The individual arrested in connection with the incident involving the throwing of tarred oil at Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist Mariyam Zubair was released from custody on Saturday.
The incident took place on the night of the 16th of last month. A suspect was arrested on 27th of the same month.
The arrested individual has been identified as Ahmed Rishmah, 20, of Sunlight Villa, GA. Dhandhoo.
Rishmah was remanded in custody for 15 days by the Criminal Court the day after his arrest. He was produced before the Criminal Court again on Saturday.
Criminal Court Judge Aminath Azlifa ordered his release on the following grounds:

There is sufficient evidence to bring a charge against him; however, the alleged offence is categorised as a minor one.

He has already spent 15 days in custody.

He has agreed to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
The court ordered his release under specific conditions. In the event of a breach of these conditions, Rishmah will be remanded in custody again.
Mariyam Zubair was attacked after making a public statement referring to the use of vape by President Mohamed Muizzu’s son, and claiming that vape had been banned in the Maldives.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has filed a civil case against Zubair.

Mariyam Zubair has also been summoned by the Maldives Police Service for questioning.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
