More than 17,000 children under the age of 18 are currently engaged in employment, according to data released by the Maldives Statistics Bureau (MSB).
The figures were published in a report released by the MSB Saturday to mark national Children’s Day. The data is based on the most recent national census.
According to the report:

17,651 children aged between 15 and 17 are employed

This accounts for approximately one in six children in that age group

58% of these children are boys, while 42% are girls
The MSB stated that the likelihood of children being employed increases with age. Of the children in employment, 27% are 17 years old.
The report also outlines the sectors where children are most frequently employed:

35% work in wholesale and retail trade, and motor vehicle repair

18% are engaged in accommodation and catering services

13% work in government administration, security services, or social protection sectors
