Over 17,000 children aged 15–17 in employment: Statistics Bureau

In addition, the report notes that 16% of children in the country are neither in employment nor attending school.

More than 17,000 children under the age of 18 are currently engaged in employment, according to data released by the Maldives Statistics Bureau (MSB).

The figures were published in a report released by the MSB Saturday to mark national Children’s Day. The data is based on the most recent national census.

According to the report:

  • 17,651 children aged between 15 and 17 are employed

  • This accounts for approximately one in six children in that age group

  • 58% of these children are boys, while 42% are girls

The MSB stated that the likelihood of children being employed increases with age. Of the children in employment, 27% are 17 years old.

The report also outlines the sectors where children are most frequently employed:

  • 35% work in wholesale and retail trade, and motor vehicle repair

  • 18% are engaged in accommodation and catering services

  • 13% work in government administration, security services, or social protection sectors

In addition, the report notes that 16% of children in the country are neither in employment nor attending school.
