The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has agreed to temporarily hand over the land adjacent to Hulhumale’ Prison to the Maldives Correctional Service, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the country’s prison infrastructure.
Homeland Minister Ali Ihsan confirmed to X Wednesday evening that the decision was made in coordination with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
HDC will release the land until the government completes the central prison currently under development and relocates inmates from existing facilities.
The government has designated K. Uthuru Thilafalhu as the site for the new central correctional facility, which will also include a specialised children's rehabilitation centre known as Hope Island.
Minister Ihsan emphasized that President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration aims to reduce the overall cost of prison operations while enhancing the quality of correctional services.
“The goal is to bring a permanent solution to longstanding issues in our prison system,” he said.
Currently, the Maldives operates three main prison facilities:
-
Hulhumale’ Prison
-
K. Maafushi Prison
-
Asseyri Prison in K. Himmafushi
