MDP submits resolution accusing speaker of obstructing sittings
The resolution was submitted by Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem on Monday.
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted a resolution to Parliament, alleging that Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla is obstructing the legislative body from carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
The resolution was submitted by Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem on Monday. In the resolution, MP Meekail stated that the Constitution requires Parliament to hold the government accountable and take action in accordance with the law, but accused the Speaker of preventing members from doing so.
Parliament, which is required to sit three days a week—on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays—did not meet on Monday or Tuesday. Only four sittings have taken place this month. MDP members have raised repeated concerns about the lack of sittings and the absence of debate on matters brought forward by the opposition.
MP Meekail, in his resolution, referred to Article 69 of the Constitution, which allows any member of Parliament to question Cabinet members or the heads of government offices in writing or orally regarding their official responsibilities.
He noted that while he had submitted a motion to question Home Minister Ali Ihsan over an issue involving the alleged filling of forms for the People’s National Congress (PNC) inside the Department of National Registration (DNR), the required 14-day notice period had passed several days ago, yet the matter was not included on the agenda.
“The rules state that Parliament must meet three times a week unless otherwise determined by the Parliament itself. However, sessions are not being held without explanation,” he said.
MP Meekail claimed that this constitutes a violation of the Parliament’s Standing Orders and interferes with the ability of members to fulfil their constitutional duties. He submitted the resolution to gauge the view of other members on the issue.
