Police officer arrested after fight in Malé salon

A police officer has been arrested and remanded in custody in connection with a fight inside a salon in Malé, police confirmed on Saturday.

The incident occurred on Friday, and the officer was taken into custody the same day. The Criminal Court ordered a five-day remand on Saturday.

The suspect has been identified as:

  • Ali Manik, 43, Asreevilla / S. Hithadhoo

According to the remand order, Ali Manik is currently receiving treatment in hospital after falling while in custody. As a result, he was unable to attend the hearing. The court directed that he must appear before a judge within 24 hours of being discharged.

The court noted that:

  • Police investigative officers identified him as a law enforcement officer.

  • Evidence linking him to the incident has been presented.

  • An incident report was submitted by police.

Police said the case was reported after he entered the salon, created disorder, damaged property and engaged in a physical altercation with an employee.

A police spokesperson told Daur that Ali Manik has been suspended without pay since Saturday following his arrest.

He also said the officer confronted police at the scene and obstructed them.

Police stated that the criminal investigation is ongoing and that the Professional Standards Command is taking administrative action in relation to the incident.
