Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan has formally requested the Parliament to initiate an inquiry into the recent incident in which a 21-year-old woman was found on the roof of a building in Henveiru.

MP Azaan sent a letter on Wednesday to the Speaker of Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, raising concerns over the police’s handling of the case. In the letter, he stated that the police response in this incident appeared different from standard procedure and called for an investigation by the Parliament’s 241 Committee on National Security Services.

The woman was found on the roof of a building in Henveiru on Friday morning. Her condition worsened, and she was placed on a ventilator on Saturday. She was later removed from the ventilator on Tuesday night.

Speculation has circulated on social media, suggesting the possibility of foul play. However, the Maldives Police Service has stated that the woman did not fall from the ninth floor as a result of being pushed.

Police have confirmed that the woman had visited a house in the Machchangolhi ward earlier that night. The house is also where Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen resides. A gathering was held at the building that night.

Allegations on social media have linked Ameen to the incident, particularly in relation to possible interference with the investigation. The Minister has denied these claims. He clarified the following in a statement posted on social media:

  • The building is jointly owned by him and three of his siblings

  • The gathering did not take place in his apartment

  • He was unaware of the gathering until Friday evening

  • Two of his nephews were present at the event and have been questioned by police

  • He has not contacted any investigative or government agencies regarding the case and has not attempted to influence the investigation

MP Azaan stated that public interest in the incident and the perceived lack of transparency warranted parliamentary oversight.
