Parliament on Monday rejected an opposition MDP motion to express concern over the investigation into the fall of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed from the ninth floor of H. Fentenoy onto the rooftop of the H. Mitaz warehouse.
The motion was presented by Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir on behalf of the MDP, stating that the issue is of public concern and directly related to the interests of society.
Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, who presided over the session, stated that the rules of the parliament require emergency motions to be based on factual information. However, he noted that the motion filed by Mauroof contained inaccuracies.
“The motion claims that the crime scene of the incident is the residence of Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohammed Ameen. This is not correct, as the Minister does not reside at the location where the incident occurred,” Nazim said.
He concluded that as the motion did not meet the factual requirements, it could not be considered an emergency matter under the rules of the parliament.
Mauroof’s motion claimed that the incident took place at the residence of Minister Mohammed Ameen. However, the crime scene was located on the ninth floor of Fentenoy, while the warehouse's roof at H. Mitaz was involved in the incident. Ameen resides in Mandhooge Dhekunuge.
The incident occurred approximately five hours after they left Mandhooge Dhekunuge, where they were allegedly hosting a party. According to then Police Commissioner Ali Shujau, the investigation has not yet determined which house the individuals were intoxicated in at the time of the incident.
The emergency motion outlined several concerns, including:
-
The involvement of individuals connected to Amin and accusations that he may have influenced the investigation.
-
The allegation that Amin had called the then Police Commissioner, Shujau, to intervene in the investigation.
-
Claims that the police's actions were inconsistent with the procedures followed in similar cases, with contradictions in the information provided by the authorities.
-
The assertion that Raud Ahmed Zilal, who was with Yumnu on the night of the incident, tested positive for drugs but was not arrested.
-
The belief that the police's handling of the case prevented Yumnu from obtaining justice, with widespread concerns and protests from young people.
Mauroof requested that the matter be debated in the parliament under the emergency motion.
