Maldives, Malaysia sign 5 agreements on health, tourism, sports

President Muizzu said the agreements provide a basis to further develop relations between the Maldives and Malaysia.

President Mohamed Muizzu began his official visit to Malaysia yesterday. Five agreements were signed between the Maldives and Malaysia Monday.

The agreements were signed following a ceremony in Putrajaya, where Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim formally welcomed President Muizzu. A joint statement by the two leaders was issued after the signing.

The five memoranda of understanding signed between the two countries are:

    Cooperation in the youth and sports sector — signed by Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel on behalf of the Maldives and Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh on behalf of Malaysia.

    Strengthening cooperation in the health sector — signed by Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel for the Maldives and Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa for Malaysia.

  • 3-

    Strengthening relations in the field of tourism — signed by Maldivian Ambassador to Malaysia Maryam Shabeena and Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Mohamad Alamin.

    Enhancing bilateral relations — signed by Ambassador Maryam Shabeena for the Maldives and Deputy Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin for Malaysia.

  • 5-

    Training of foreign office staff — signed by Ambassador Maryam Shabeena on behalf of the Maldives and Deputy Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin for Malaysia.

Speaking at a press conference following the ceremony, President Muizzu said the agreements provide a basis to further develop relations between the Maldives and Malaysia. He also expressed the intention to expand cooperation in various sectors.

The President’s Office stated that President Muizzu will hold official talks with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the visit. Discussions will include strengthening cooperation, exchanging views on regional and international matters, and identifying new areas for collaboration. Memoranda of understanding and formal exchanges of notes will also take place during these meetings.

During the visit, President Muizzu is scheduled to attend the Business Forum organised by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and meet Malaysian business representatives. He will visit the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and deliver a lecture.

President Muizzu will also meet members of the Maldivian community residing in Malaysia to hear their concerns and discuss ways to support them.

The President is accompanied by a delegation comprising Cabinet members and senior government officials.
