In a move aimed at resolving longstanding shortages of essential medicines, State Trading Organisation (STO) of Maldives has signed an agreement with HLL Lifecare, a public sector company under India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The agreement will ensure consistent and affordable access to critical drugs across Maldives, addressing a major issue in the nation’s healthcare supply chain.
STO stated that the country has experienced persistent difficulties in obtaining essential medicines, impacting patient care.
“This partnership is a direct and permanent solution,” STO announced, adding that all imported medicines will meet WHO standards and comply with Maldivian regulations.
The medicines will be supplied under India’s Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhu Pariyojana (PMBJP), also known as the Janaushadhu scheme, which is designed to provide affordable generic drugs.
HLL, a key player during the COVID-19 pandemic, had previously supported STO by delivering vital medications on time, proving its reliability. The current agreement builds on that successful cooperation.
“With this partnership, Maldives is now linked to one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical supply chains,” STO said.
