Govt begins notifying ineligible Gedhoruveriya flat applicants
Housing Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib previously stated that approximately 700 individuals are expected to be removed from the earlier list.
Housing Ministry has begun issuing written notifications to individuals deemed ineligible for the 4,000 flats under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme.
The flats are being constructed in Hulhumalé by two Indian firms under a housing programme initiated by the previous government, which had initially finalised a list of beneficiaries.
Following the change in administration, President Mohamed Muizzu's government reviewed the list. A committee was formed for this purpose, and a revised list identifying 1,820 eligible individuals was published in February.
However, the government has now decided to revert to the original list prepared by the previous administration, with the condition that individuals who do not meet eligibility criteria will be removed.
According to the Ministry, the following categories of applicants are ineligible:
-
Individuals who have received housing under previous government schemes.
-
Individuals who have received housing through state-owned enterprises.
-
Individuals who own private residences exceeding 600 square feet.
Housing Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib previously stated that approximately 700 individuals are expected to be removed from the earlier list.
Those who are notified of ineligibility will have the opportunity to appeal the decision. Flats removed from the list will be reallocated after this process is completed.
Minister Muthalib reiterated that the government’s policy is to provide one housing unit per family. He noted instances that contradict this policy, including:
-
391 couples receiving two flats, of which only one will be retained.
-
305 spouses of flat recipients also receiving land under the government’s land scheme.
-
302 individuals with existing housing in Malé also being listed for flats.
Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation, the state housing company, confirmed that 3,778 individuals listed by the previous administration had already signed agreements to receive flats.
