The Outpatient Department (OPD) of Hulhumalé Hospital resumed services at 11:00 a.m. on Friday following a 12-hour disruption caused by a power outage.

The hospital experienced a complete shutdown beginning early Thursday night due to an issue with the main power cable supplying electricity to the hospital building. A notice was placed at the hospital directing patients to seek services at the nearby Hiyaa Clinic during the interruption.

Patients admitted to the hospital’s wards and intensive care unit (ICU) were temporarily transferred to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Tree Top Hospital as a precaution.

Speaking to Atoll Times, IGMH CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem stated that the outage was caused by a fault in the cable supplying electricity to Hulhumalé Hospital’s main building. He confirmed that the State Electric Company (STELCO) restored power at approximately 8:30 a.m.

“Electricity was restored at full load at 8:30 a.m. We took some time to monitor cable stability before resuming services to ensure the system could operate under normal conditions,” Haleem said.

Following the restoration of electricity and successful testing, emergency and outpatient services resumed by late morning. Hospital operations are expected to continue without further disruption for the rest of the day.
