The Maldives Media Council (MMC) has officially handed over three vacant seats to newly elected members, one week after the elections were held on 21 June 2025.
The council filled one seat representing the public and two representing media professionals. The elected members are:
-
Leevan Ahmed Naseer from Adhadhu
-
Mohamed Muzayyin Nazim from Dhauru

Hawwa Wajda, elected to the public representative seat
Ordinarily, elected members assume their roles immediately following the election and begin participating in council activities. However, the process was delayed due to a complaint filed with the Ministry of Youth.
The complaint was submitted by Mohamed Amin Ali, a candidate who did not secure any votes in the election. Amin alleged that the opportunity for re-registration had not been reopened prior to the vote. The complaint was filed approximately 12 hours before the election took place.
Despite the pending complaint, the election was conducted as scheduled. After reviewing the matter, the Youth Ministry decided not to proceed with a re-election. It instructed the MMC to accept the results and formalise the appointments.
Following the ministry’s directive, the MMC completed the formal handover and acknowledged the new members through its official social media platforms.
