Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Asif, who has been under suspension since November 7, continues to receive his full monthly salary, according to official information.
Asif, who also served as President of the Prisons Club, was suspended following allegations of depositing more than MVR 200,000 into various accounts. The investigation into the matter remains ongoing.
As confirmed to Atoll Times, Asif receives his full salary despite the suspension. The monthly post-deduction salary for an Assistant Commissioner of Prisons is MVR 37,761. Over the eight-month suspension period, he has received a total of MVR 302,088.
A Maldives Correctional Service media official confirmed that Asif’s suspension is still in effect and the investigation has not yet concluded. "The investigation is still ongoing, so the suspension remains," the official said.
Inquiries about Asif’s continued salary payments were addressed by noting that his suspension is being carried out in accordance with internal correctional regulations.
Documents and information shared with Daur indicate that the case relates to financial transactions involving the Prisons Club. In August last year, 35 prison officers submitted a petition to Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer, raising concerns about financial irregularities.
According to available records, Asif deposited MVR 70,000 into the Prisons Club account in two transactions. The origin of these funds remains unclear.
Some correctional staff have expressed concern over the pace of the investigation and the continued delay in resolving the case.
