
5,000 fined for dangerous driving in 10 months
The figures were made public after a fatal road accident involving a 17-year-old boy occurred in Malé on Tuesday.
Police statistics show that 5,406 fines were issued for dangerous driving on Malé roads and the Sinamalé Bridge in the 10-month period from 11 September 2024 to 8 July 2025.

According to police:

Dangerous driving offences totalled 5,406, with 4,566 related to motorbikes and 840 involving four-wheeled vehicles.

A total of 30,329 warnings were issued, including 27,291 for motorbikes and 3,038 for four-wheelers.

Officers stopped 154 motorbike riders and four four-wheeler drivers for dangerous driving during the period.

Police towed 2,088 vehicles for traffic violations, including 1,821 motorbikes and 267 four-wheelers.

An additional 5,721 vehicles were towed for parking violations, of which 3,822 were motorbikes and 1,899 were four-wheelers.

A total of 1,142 cases of driving without a licence were recorded—1,062 involving motorbikes and 80 involving four-wheelers.
The Hulhumalé Neighbourhood Police have since been conducting public awareness efforts, placing boards in various locations to communicate the risks associated with dangerous driving.
