Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan has retired from the judiciary on Monday following the acceptance of his retirement by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
The Supreme Court issued a statement acknowledging his service as both Chief Justice and judge.
Chief Justice Muthasim had submitted his request for retirement in May. The JSC on Thursday resolved to grant the retirement with effect from 21 July. The administrative responsibilities of the Supreme Court have been temporarily assigned to Justice Abdullah Hameed.
Prior to his retirement, the JSC approved an allowance package for Chief Justice Muthasim in accordance with the Judges' Retirement Rules, which no longer provide for a distinct special allowance for the Chief Justice. According to the current regulations:
-
A lump sum amounting to one-third of the basic salary multiplied by the number of years served as a judge will be disbursed.
-
A monthly payment equivalent to one-fortieth of the basic salary multiplied by the years of service will be provided for the duration of the person’s life.
-
The retiree will be entitled to a medical insurance package equal to what is available to a sitting judge at the time of departure. This will also extend to the retiree’s spouse and children under the age of 18.
The JSC informed Parliament that under the current regulations, Muthasim is entitled to a total of MVR 185,100. The specific monthly amount to be received has not yet been disclosed.
This marks the second time Muthasim has served on the Supreme Court bench. He was part of the first permanent Supreme Court bench formed under the new Constitution and served from 10 August 2010. His tenure ended following an amendment that reduced the number of judges on the bench.
He was reappointed as Chief Justice on 8 December 2019.
Muthasim previously held several key positions including:
-
Director, Legal Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1994–2001)
-
Dean, Faculty of Sharia and Law at Maldives College of Higher Education (2001–2005)
-
Partner, Clipper & Galleon Law Associates (2005–2010)
He holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Buckingham and a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Glasgow.
