President Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday announced that a seaplane platform will be established in N. Velidhoo, with operations set to begin in January next year.
Speaking during a visit to the island, President Muizzu said the platform will serve as a temporary air connectivity solution for the island until the construction of an airport in N. Vihafaru is completed. The proposed airport site is located near the two most populous islands in Noonu Atoll, Velidhoo and Holhudhoo.
“We will set up a seaplane platform in this village to be used until the airport is built, and for various purposes after the airport, and seaplane operations will start next January,” President Muizzu said.
The President also announced that a sea ambulance will be deployed in Velidhoo.
During the visit, President Muizzu addressed a petition signed by 600 residents requesting modifications to the island’s port. He stated that the proposed changes will be incorporated into next year’s budget after technical assessments are completed.
President Muizzu also laid the foundation stones for four projects in Velidhoo:
-
A land reclamation project to create space for industrial activities
-
Construction of a new police station building
-
Construction of a new hospital building
-
Construction of a Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre
The President said these initiatives reflect the government's commitment to infrastructure and service development in Velidhoo.
