Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated on Friday that MVR 6.9 billion (approximately USD 450 million) remains unused from the credit line extended to the Maldives by India during his administration. He made the remark during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the Maldives.
Solih posted on X that the credit line funds had been earmarked for key infrastructure and development projects under his government.
Projects listed by Solih include:
-
Relocation of Malé Commercial Port to Gulhifalhu
-
Construction of a cricket stadium in Hulhumalé
-
Establishment of a cancer hospital in L. Gan
-
Expansion works at MIFCO
He noted that the current administration had altered two of the initiatives: the cancer hospital has been relocated to Hulhumalé, and the port relocation site has been changed to Thilafushi.
Solih expressed hope that the Maldivian government would seek ways to utilise the remaining portion of the USD 800 million credit line. “I hope that during the official talks between the two governments during Prime Minister Modi’s visit, the government will work to find a way to use this money in the most beneficial way for the people,” he wrote.
Modi is also expected to meet with leaders of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), of which Solih is a member, and to inaugurate a number of projects during his visit.
