Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday handed over the symbolic keys marking the completion of 4,000 housing units constructed in Hulhumalé under the Gedhoruveriya housing project initiated during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.
The handover took place during a ceremony at the President’s Office in Malé, as part of Prime Minister Modi’s two-day official visit to the Maldives.
The housing project, financed through a loan from the Export-Import Bank of India, began construction in 2021. The project comprises 1,200 two-bedroom units and 2,800 three-bedroom units. Construction works have been completed, and agreements are currently being signed with recipients. Distribution of the flats is expected to conclude before the end of July.
In addition to the housing project, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the Addu road construction project and several other infrastructure projects on islands across the Maldives.
The Government of India also donated 72 heavy vehicles to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) as part of ongoing bilateral cooperation.
