Abdulla Jameel Moosa was appointed as a judge of the High Court on Sunday.
The appointment was made at a ceremony held at the Supreme Court. The certificate of appointment was handed over by Judicial Service Commission (JSC) President Hussain Riza Adam.
Jameel has over 15 years of experience in the judiciary. He served as Magistrate of the L. Dhanbidhoo Magistrate’s Court from 23 September 2003 to 31 January 2009. He was then appointed as a judge at the Civil Court, where he served from 1 February 2009 to 21 February 2019. After retiring from the bench, he worked as a lawyer for six years.
Seventeen candidates were considered for the High Court position. The JSC had earlier decided to appoint Mohamed Shaheed, who previously held a political post at the Ministry of Homeland Security in the current administration and is a member of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
However, Shaheed withdrew his candidacy on Sunday after a case was filed in the Civil Court seeking to halt his appointment.
