The statement of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, who sustained injuries after falling from the ninth floor of an apartment building in Malé on 18 April, has not yet been recorded, police said on Wednesday.

Police confirmed that neither they nor the Presidential Commission previously assigned to the case have received a statement from Yumnu. Both institutions indicated that the family has not cooperated with the process of obtaining her account of the incident.

The family had earlier stated that although Yumnu was discharged from a hospital in Malaysia following treatment, they were unable to provide a statement.

When asked during a media briefing whether a statement from Yumnu had been obtained, police responded: “Yumna's statement has not been taken yet,” without providing further details on the delay.

Police have previously stated they sought assistance from Malaysian authorities in connection with the investigation. Two officers, including a medical professional, were sent to Malaysia to facilitate the statement collection.

The family maintains that no official request for a statement has been made by police.

The Presidential Commission that was established under a presidential decree to investigate the incident was dissolved last month. The final report issued by the commission presented several key findings:

  • There was no evidence suggesting Yumnu was harmed by another individual.

  • Residents and owners of H. Fantanoi, the building from which Yumnu fell, stated they were unfamiliar with her.

  • According to available CCTV footage and witness testimony, there was no indication of coercion. Yumnu appeared to ascend the stairs and enter the building voluntarily.

  • No signs of forced assault were identified on her body.

  • It could not be determined whether Yumnu was pushed, jumped, or fell from the terrace of H. Fantanoi onto the roof of the adjacent building, H. Mitaz.

Yumnu and Raud Ahmed Zilal, who were together on the night of the incident, were arrested, but footage did not show them entering any apartment within the building. The building’s CCTV recordings were shared with authorities by the owner.

The circumstances surrounding the fall remain under investigation.
