Malé and Hulhumalé experienced a power outage on Thursday, marking the second such incident in the capital area this month.
The last outage occurred on 9 August and lasted more than three hours before electricity supply was restored.
State Electric Company (STELCO) did not specify when Thursday’s issue would be fully resolved. “The problem is being resolved and power is being restored,” a spokesperson said.
About 25 minutes after the outage began, the company reported that 34% of customers in the city remained without power.
Frequent power disruptions have been reported in recent years, with several outages recorded in June and July last year. In June, a six-hour blackout prompted the President to order an investigation. STELCO later attributed that incident to an interconnection issue involving the Sinamale Bridge, which links the electricity supply between Malé and Hulhumalé.
