Islamic Affairs Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has urged the Muslim community to take part in what he described as the struggle for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Shaheem made the remarks at a rally in Malé on Friday protesting the Israeli occupation of Gaza. The event was part of the Global Sumud Flotilla movement, organised in 44 countries against the occupation.

The rally took place in the Maafannu Stadium area and was held simultaneously in other islands. It was organised by a steering committee led by the International Aid Campaign (IAC) and included Maldivian civil society organisations, companies, institutions, and members of the public. Similar rallies were held in five other countries on the same day.

Shaheem told the crowd that those present were standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Islamic Ummah. He said the aim of such gatherings was to oppose what he called Israel’s actions in Gaza and to demonstrate unity.

“God willing, the Palestinian state will be established. We must join the struggle that the Palestinian people are waging,” he said, calling for participation through words, resources, and all available means.

The minister called for the immediate lifting of the blockade on Gaza, the removal of sanctions, and the opening of borders to allow humanitarian assistance, particularly for children and vulnerable people. He also condemned support provided to Israel by major international powers.

Shaheem concluded by urging continued solidarity until an independent Palestinian state is established.
