The government has announced that it will cover tuition fees for PhD students in Islamic fields as the Maldives National University (MNU) begins offering doctoral opportunities in these subjects.

MNU on Monday introduced two PhD programmes in:

  • Islamic Studies

  • Islamic Sharia

The full-time programmes will run for three to four years. The fee per semester is set at MVR 14,340. Based on this, government assistance will range between MVR 86,000 and MVR 114,000 per student for the duration of the course.

The decision was confirmed by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, who stated that both tuition fees and pocket money will be provided to imams undertaking the programmes. He encouraged eligible candidates to apply.

Dr Shaheem had previously said that imams who have obtained master’s degrees in Maldivian mosques would be given opportunities to pursue PhDs at foreign universities. According to him, eleven imams have already expressed interest.
