The Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA) has advised Maldivian students to exercise caution before enrolling in courses in Sri Lanka.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the MQA noted that some centres in Sri Lanka are conducting programmes that do not meet the standards approved by the country’s Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC). The announcement also highlighted that certain higher-level programmes, including those above higher diploma level, are being conducted in collaboration with foreign institutions without proper authorisation.
The MQA clarified that certificates from such courses will not be recognised in the Maldives. Students intending to study in Sri Lanka have been urged to obtain an “intended” document from the MQA before beginning their studies.
According to the MQA:
-
The TVEC of Sri Lanka only approves tertiary programmes below the higher diploma level.
-
Programmes above degree level require approval from the University Grants Commission, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Vocational Education.
The MQA reiterated its call for students to confirm that their chosen programmes meet the relevant accreditation requirements before proceeding with enrolment.
