Maldives tracks student safety amid Middle East developments

The Ministry of Higher Education on Sunday said it is monitoring the situation of Maldivian students in the Middle East following recent developments in the region.
The ministry’s statement follows joint military action by the United States and Israel against Iran on Saturday, and subsequent retaliatory strikes by Iran on United States military bases in the Middle East. As a result, airspace in parts of the Gulf region has been closed and alerts have been issued in several areas.
In its statement, the ministry said the government is monitoring the safety of Maldivian students studying in the Middle East. It said discussions are under way with relevant government agencies, Maldivian diplomatic missions and educational institutions to assess whether assistance is required.
The ministry said it is prepared to take necessary steps to ensure the safety and welfare of students if the situation changes.
Earlier, President Mohamed Muizzu formed a nine-member cabinet committee to address issues arising from the conflict in the Middle East.
