Immigration authorities arrested 81 expatriate workers in a two-hour operation carried out in Male on Tuesday afternoon.
The raid, which focused on foreign workers without valid visas, was conducted across 25 locations in the capital. According to Immigration, 463 establishments were inspected and 932 foreigners were checked during the operation.
Information about 10 sites where foreigners are allegedly engaged in illegal business activities has been shared with the relevant authorities.
A total of 160 immigration officers and 66 police officers participated in the operation.
The arrests come two days after President Mohamed Muizzu announced that a nationwide operation would be launched against illegal immigrants. The President said that 8,600 people had been deported so far under the government’s efforts, with more deportations planned.
On Monday, Immigration also conducted a separate raid, which led to the arrest of 24 expatriate workers.
