President Mohamed Muizzu has said that the State Trading Organisation (STO) will sell chilli without undermining the Kandoodhoo chilli trade, which has become a significant local business.

Speaking on Wednesday, the President said STO has been tasked with supplying apples and oranges at lower prices and has added 23 basic food items to its wholesale list, including chilli. He assured that the move would not negatively impact Kandoodhoo chilli farmers.

The President explained that if STO is to sell chilli, it would do so by purchasing from Kandoodhoo traders at fair prices, ensuring that farmers continue to benefit from their produce.

“I assure you that STO will continue to buy chilli at the right price that will benefit you and arrange it so that you will get the benefits you need,” he said.

He added that the government would work to address challenges faced by chilli growers in Kandoodhoo and expand cultivation. The Ministry of Agriculture, he said, will assist farmers in improving production. A team from the ministry is expected to visit Kandoodhoo soon to discuss the matter with local farmers.

Kandoodhoo chilli, grown on Dh. Kandoodhoo since 2001, has gained wide popularity across the Maldives due to its distinct flavour and aroma.
