The Criminal Court on Sunday sentenced two men to death for the murder of Ahmed Udayyau in GA. Maamendhoo four years ago.
The men convicted are Ahmed Shameem and Mohamed Mazin, both from Maamendhoo. They were found guilty of Udayyau’s murder by the Criminal Court on 25 August.
During a hearing held on Sunday, the court heard statements from the victim’s heirs. Udayyau’s father requested the death penalty, describing it as the highest punishment prescribed under Islamic Sharia. His mother stated she could consider forgiveness if she were told the truth about the incident, but when asked by the judge to make a decision, she also requested the death penalty. Based on this, the court sentenced both Shameem and Mazin to death.
Another individual charged in the case, a boy under the age of 18 at the time of the incident, was convicted three years ago. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to pay MVR 1 million in compensation.
A fourth defendant, Sharaf Rasheed, was convicted only of assault in connection with the case.
