A new camping site for school students has been opened at Crossroads Maldives, providing a dedicated space for cadets, scouts and girl guides to conduct camps and outdoor activities.
The facility was inaugurated by President Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu said this is the first time in 15 years that a designated camping site has been made available for students in the Malé region.
He said parents and teachers involved in uniform bodies have welcomed the initiative, as it provides a safe and accessible location for school camping and field-based learning.
“The site will also serve as a venue for various educational activities,” Dr Shafeeu said.
According to the ministry, the facility will be used for:
-
Science excursions, including studies related to fisheries and the marine environment.
-
Environmental education programmes, focusing on sustainability and nature awareness.
-
Family learning activities, where parents can join students on weekends for outdoor educational sessions.
Previously, schools in the Greater Malé Area conducted camping activities at Kuda Bandos and Feydhoo Finolhu, but those islands have since been developed into resorts.
The former government had announced plans to dredge an island near Kudagiri for a student camp site, though the project did not begin before the end of its term.
