President Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday announced that government employees who are parents of children with disabilities will be permitted to work from home.

The announcement was made during the President’s address at the opening sitting of People’s Majlis this year. President Muizzu said the government will prioritise access to education for children with disabilities and outlined a series of measures planned in this area.

He said parents of children with disabilities who are employed in the civil service will be allowed to work from home starting in March next year. The measure is intended to support families by enabling parents to balance work responsibilities with care needs.

The President also announced plans to introduce home schooling options for children with disabilities. He said a bill will be proposed during the first session of Parliament to amend existing laws to allow home schooling, based on assessments of students with disabilities.

In his address, President Muizzu said the government will prepare textbooks in various subjects tailored to the needs of children with disabilities. He added that specific programmes will be introduced this year to support students with disabilities preparing for O-Level examinations.

The President said efforts will be made to increase the number of teachers trained to work with children with disabilities. He also said schools will be equipped with facilities and equipment to support these students, including classrooms and toilets designed to meet their needs.

President Muizzu said the government aims to strengthen secondary education by improving quality and ensuring inclusion of all students. He added that work has begun to address issues in the education sector that have not been adequately addressed in the past.
