The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported that 14 islands have been affected by heavy rainfall across the country over the past two weeks.
According to the NDMA, the rainfall is linked to the ongoing south-west monsoon, which is expected to continue bringing heavy showers to several regions.
The islands that reported weather-related damage are: HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, R. Fainu, M. Dhiggaru, M. Maaenboodhoo, L. Maavah, GA. Maamendhoo, GDh. Hoandedhdhoo, GDh. Nadella, GDh. Rathafandhoo, GDh. Madaveli, GDh. Fares-Maathoda, S. Maradhoo, and Fuvahmulah.
The NDMA stated that one house in Kulhudhuffushi had to be evacuated due to damage. In most affected areas, rainfall caused flooding and damage to household appliances and electrical equipment.
The Authority also noted that several other islands, including HDh. Nellaidhoo, had experienced flooding though they had not yet officially reported damages.
NDMA teams are assessing the extent of the damage, after which compensation will be arranged in accordance with established procedures.
The recent adverse weather has also disrupted transport and maritime activity. Last Friday, a landing craft carrying cargo to northern islands capsized, resulting in three deaths.
Authorities have warned that weather conditions remain unstable and have advised seafarers to exercise caution and adhere to official travel advisories.
