President Mohamed Muizzu has announced that each family from L. Mundoo and L. Kalhaidhoo who relocated to L. Gan after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami will receive MVR 50,000 in compensation.

The President made the announcement during his visit to Laamu Atoll on Tuesday, where residents reminded him of the long-pending compensation initially promised by a previous administration. Ten years after relocation, the families had been asked to apply for the payment but did not receive any updates.

Speaking at a rally in Gan, President Muizzu said that the issue had remained unresolved and that the compensation would now be provided to ensure fairness to the affected families.

He stated that 165 individuals have submitted the required documents and that the funds have already been allocated. Teams from relevant government agencies will visit the island to finalise the process. A total of MVR 8.45 million will be distributed, with each eligible person receiving MVR 50,000.

President Muizzu also announced that 300 housing units will be developed in Gan. This includes 100 new units recently signed for construction, 100 units currently under development, and an additional 100 units planned for future phases.
