Residents of Feydhoo voted on Saturday to remain under the administration of the Addu City Council, rejecting the proposal to form a separate island council.

According to the results announced so far, 72.57 per cent of voters opposed the creation of a separate council, while 26.12 per cent voted in favour.

The referendum was held in Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo — the three islands of Addu where residents were asked to decide whether they wished to establish independent island councils. Voting began at 8 a.m. and concluded at 4 p.m.

Before the referendum, many had anticipated that Feydhoo would opt to remain within the Addu City Council, as the island is physically connected to Hithadhoo by land and functions as part of the broader Addu City network.

A total of 9,576 people were eligible to vote across the three islands. The Elections Commission (EC) reported that 4,510 voters had cast their ballots by the close of voting.

Results from Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo are expected to determine whether those two islands will form separate island councils, as part of the government’s decentralisation process.
