President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday presented a special commemorative shield to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, recipient of the Grand Order of the Distinguished Rule of Ghaazee (GODRG).
The shield was presented at an official ceremony held at the Social Centre in Malé to mark Victory Day. The honour was conferred in recognition of Maumoon’s role as President in leading efforts to repel the 3 November 1988 attack.
During the ceremony, President Muizzu highlighted the decisive actions taken by Maumoon at the time, noting that his leadership and decision-making were instrumental in safeguarding the nation’s independence and security.
He said the recognition, coming 37 years after the events, reflects the state’s continued appreciation of Maumoon’s service and contribution during a critical moment in the country’s history.
Victory Day is observed annually on 3 November to commemorate the 1988 attempted coup and invasion of the Maldives by a group of armed mercenaries.
