Fenaka Corporation said on Thursday that it had begun restoring water supply to households in Fuvahmulah after more than three days of disruption. However, many residents say they are still not receiving water.

Water supply in Fuvahmulah, home to about 9,000 people, was cut off on Monday afternoon after tests detected unsafe levels of contamination in the network.

The government had earlier announced that the issue would be resolved within six hours, but the disruption continued well beyond that period.

Fenaka’s office in Fuvahmulah said water distribution to households resumed on Wednesday night.

Despite the announcement, several residents said they were unable to access water, while others reported that their meters had been closed.

Residents said Fenaka staff visited homes to drain stagnant water but sealed the water meters afterwards, preventing supply until they were reopened. Some said they raised the issue with Fenaka but had not received a response.

One resident told Daur that although Fenaka claimed water had been supplied, houses on either side of his home were still without water.

Fenaka said households with cross connections in their internal plumbing systems were not receiving water.

As the disruptions continued, some residents held a protest on the island on Wednesday evening.
