President Mohamed Muizzu said on Friday that more than 1,800 development projects are underway across the Maldives and urged the public not to vote in a way that would hinder their progress in the upcoming local council elections.

Speaking at a rally held at Artificial Beach to mark two years of the PNC government, President Muizzu delivered an hour-long address outlining the administration’s achievements and planned initiatives.

“As I speak, there are 1,875 projects underway in the Maldives. Of these, 1,356 projects have been signed by the government,” he said.

The President said the government’s development policy is based on equality and that all islands will be developed without distinction. He noted that he had visited islands where no president had travelled previously.

According to the President:

  • Many islands were excluded during the previous administration.

  • These islands will now receive services such as ATMs and enhanced police presence.

With the council elections scheduled for late March, President Muizzu appealed to voters to support councils that would work in cooperation with the government.

“I ask the people of Maldives to continue to cooperate with us in these efforts. No one should allow the upcoming council elections to become an obstacle to these important projects,” he said.

He added that he believed voters would elect councils that would support the government’s policies and assist in implementing development work.

During his remarks, President Muizzu also highlighted several announcements:

  • Household utility bills will be capped at MVR 400 during Ramadan, and households will be able to receive fish cans.

  • Deportation of foreigners who do not submit required information by Saturday will begin on Sunday.

  • Drug smugglers will face the strongest punishment allowed under Islamic law.

  • The government has paid MVR 444 million in outstanding arrears left by the previous administration.

  • Rules for allocating 15,000 plots from Rasmale will be announced next week.

  • Dollar ATMs will be installed in 70 islands before March.
