Speaker of the People's Majlis, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, said on Thursday that President Mohamed Muizzu would become the first president in the Maldives to secure a second consecutive term under the current constitutional system.

Abdul Raheem made the remarks during a rally held in Himandhoo to mark the victory of the People's National Congress (PNC) in a local council by-election.

Addressing supporters, he called on party members to continue supporting the PNC and said he believed President Muizzu would win the 2028 presidential election with public backing.

“God willing, with the blessings of Allah, the current President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will become the first leader to serve a second term under this constitutional system,” Abdul Raheem said.

He urged party supporters to prepare for the next presidential election and said the focus should remain on securing victory for both President Muizzu and the PNC in 2028.

Abdul Raheem also commented on criticism directed at the government, stating that the administration would respond through its work and policies rather than public exchanges.

“Our ideology is one of nationalism, development, unity, and peace. Therefore, I advise you not to pay heed to the various narratives being spread on the streets,” he said.

The Speaker further stated that the PNC respects election outcomes and accepts the decisions of voters.

“We are not the type of people who seek court interventions when we lose an election. We accept the people’s decision, respect it, and have the courage and vision to plan the future in accordance with the public’s pulse and spirit,” he said.

Abdul Raheem also said President Muizzu had shown willingness to respond to public opinion following recent council election results and added that changes within the administration were already visible.

Referring to recent allegations made against the President through a video circulated online, Abdul Raheem said attempts were being made to damage the President’s reputation.

“Attempts are being made to assassinate the President’s character in hopes of defeating him by any means,” he said.

He added that President Muizzu responds to criticism through “work and results” rather than personal attacks.

Abdul Raheem concluded by stating that the PNC remains united and cannot easily be divided.
