Bassam appears in court in civilian clothes after refusing jail uniform

Former Football Association of Maldives (FAM) president Bassam Adeel Jaleel appeared in court on Sunday wearing civilian clothing after refusing to enter the courtroom in the standard jail uniform.
A hearing in the ongoing money laundering case related to funds provided to FAM by FIFA — allegedly used by Bassam to purchase an apartment in Amin Avenue — had been scheduled for 8:15 am. However, proceedings were delayed until 11 am as Bassam declined to appear in prison attire.
He was presented before the court at the later time in civilian clothing.
The hearing was subsequently adjourned after co-defendant Mohamed Ageel failed to attend. Judge Mohamed Misbah ruled that:

Ageel is to be remanded in custody to ensure his presence.

Maldives Corrections Service must facilitate meetings between Bassam and his lawyers.
Bassam is already serving a nine-year prison sentence in two separate FAM corruption cases. In the current case at the Criminal Court, the state is seeking USD 1 million in damages from Amin Construction, as well as the transfer of two Amin Avenue apartments in which Bassam had resided.
