President Mohamed Muizzu announced on 13 November that he had instructed the police to conduct an unprecedented operation in the Maldives.
In a post on X, the President said more than 100 locations across the country would be searched and more than 500 police officers would take part in the operation.
The police and the Home Ministry later said more than 100 people had been arrested, identifying all of them as individuals involved in drug-related activities.
The operation has continued for nearly two weeks. Journalists have sought information about the operation since last week, but police have not provided details. It remains unclear why information about what is described as the first operation of its kind in the Maldives has been withheld.
It is also unknown whether the arrested individuals remain in custody or have been released. Police have not disclosed the identities of the detainees or details of items recovered during the operation.
