Police arrest 2 in MVR 29 million drug smuggling case

Police said both men were presented before the court and ordered to be remanded in custody for 15 days.

Two men have been arrested and remanded in custody for 15 days in connection with an attempt to smuggle hashish oil valued at MVR 29 million into the Maldives by sea.

The Maldives Customs Service said the drugs were seized on Thursday during a search of a shipment of goods brought into the Maldives by sea. Customs said the seized substances weighed 36.43 kilograms and had an estimated street value of MVR 29 million.

The Maldives Police Service said on Sunday that the two suspects were arrested on the same day as part of a police operation.

Those arrested are Hassan Mafaz, 26, of Madhaaruge, M. Mulah, and Visham Mohamed, 35, of H. Filmeesite.

Police said both men were presented before the court and ordered to be remanded in custody for 15 days.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
