Health Minister Abdulla Nazim said on Wednesday that the government intends to build a second hospital in Hulhumalé.

The minister was responding in Parliament to a question from Hulhumalé North PNC MP Hussain Shareef, who asked about plans for a tertiary hospital in the northern part of the city. The MP said the population in Phase Two of Hulhumalé is increasing and the health system requires expansion to meet demand.

Minister Nazim said population growth brings pressure on health services and that the government’s policy is to proceed with the development of another hospital in Hulhumalé.

“We are planning to finance the project with an international donor or an international contractor. The discussions are ongoing,” he said.

Nazim did not provide further details but said the project would move forward soon.
