The dredging work for the ‘Rasmale’ project in the K. Fushidhiggaru Falhu lagoon has been tripled with the deployment of one of the world’s largest dredgers.
President Mohamed Muizzu said in a social media post on Monday that a major trailer suction hopper dredger has been brought in to accelerate the reclamation work for Rasmale.
The “Cristóbal Colón” of Jan De Nul began reclamation on Monday, significantly increasing the pace of land creation for Rasmale, a project described as a 100% net-zero carbon smart eco-city. According to the government, it is the largest climate adaptation project to be undertaken in the Maldives.
The President shared the following timeline for the mobilisation of the dredger:
-
Mobilised to Rasmale on 30 November
-
First load delivered on 1 December
-
Dredging began at 05:00am
-
Discharging began at 11:41am
President Muizzu said Rasmale is planned as a fully net-zero carbon and smart eco-city. He stated that this will be the largest climate adaptation project in Maldives.
He added that the large dredger has been brought in to triple the speed of the work and that all land required for housing in the Malé region is expected to be dredged by March or April.
